Dramatis Personae.
Reinhardt Vos, Ensign.
An expert in sensors and spatiorelational science, Vos is a recent recruit to the Navy. His frequent lapses into informality, and his dependence on caffeine, are foreign to the Service, but are tolerated thanks to his formidable skills as a remote sensing and spatial data analysis professional.
[Pronunciation Guide: The "v" is not voiced, i.e., it is pronounced like an "f". The "os" is similar to "oss" in "toss". "Vos" means "fox" in Afrikaans.]
Johann Jäger, Admiral.
The veteran of an unnamed past comflict, Jäger is regarded as a loose cannon by the Navy's Sumpreme Command; this has prevented his promotion to Fleet Admiral. Jäger is secretly pleased with this, since he hates desk jobs. He has been relegated to exploration and border patrol missions to minimise his influence in internal affairs.
There is a persistent rumour in the Service that he is somehow a survivor of the Great War. This is clearly impossible, since the Nazci were defeated over thirty thousand standard Galactic years ago.
[Pronunciation Guide: The "j" is like the "y" in "yardang". The "ä" is like the "e" in "when"; the "er" is like the "u" in "burr". "Jäger" means "hunter" in German.]
Otto Steinmetz, Captain.
An erstwhile Merchant Navy captain with no combat experiance, Steinmetz's transfer to more prestigious border duty aboard a military vessel was solely by virtue of nepotism. Though he is a competent officer, feeling runs against him among ranking crew members; he prefers to avoid face-to-face communication as a result.
He constantly wears a communication headset that serves to connect him with his ship's PA system; this has become a running joke amongst the crew.

Technology.
Lightcube.
A lightcube makes use of advanced faceted-carbon technology to deliver ultra high definition, vector-based hologrammatic projections for up to .75 metres outside, and everywhere inside, the clear lightcube itself. It usually also contains precision motion detector systems. When connected to a computer terminal, this device allows data and process manipulation to be driven by a simple syntax of user gestures.
